Science may not be the best way to teach…
First off I love science! Biology, anatomy, chemistry, physiology love it so much that sometimes I wish I was back at university. But… science may not be the best way to get through to people.
After attending a pretty science heavy seminar this weekend and loving every minute of it I shared with some other attendees that I loved how science heavy this seminar was, unlike many of the other seminars I have attended. Their response kind of surprised me, my comments were met with “Yeah some of that went right over my head” and “Yeah it was hard not to fall asleep.” now this was science heavy but not anything hard to understand, and most of the people at this seminar had more formal education than I do.
That got me thinking, if people in my own industry with higher level degrees are feeling overwhelmed about this seminar than what the hell are my clients thinking when I talk about periodization, phase potentiation, or motor unit recruitment? Yeah did I lose you there… If I did you are not alone.
My main goal with Progressive Performance in all my programs, adult strength and fat loss, sports performance, and powerlifting is to make people’s lives better through strength training, and proper nutrition.
How the hell am I supposed to do that when the people I want to help are looking glazed over every time I talk science or write a long form post online? The answer I can’t.
This has moved me to use more analogies when I speak about more complex topics and keep my explanations to the basics so that people aren’t confused and can absorb the information easier and feel comfortable taking action.
The biggest thing that stands in the way of people taking action is uncertainty and its my job to simplify the science so that people can get the right information and get the results they want fast.
There are many people in the industry that have the wrong information, that are not evidence based and don’t really care about the scientific method that are influencing more and more people because they keep their message easier to understand.
It is our duty here at Progressive Performance to get our message heard, and in that we need to make it easier for people to understand.
We will try our best to teach people the important scientific principles through stories, graphics imagery and analogy to make sure that we can get our message out to everyone that needs it.
